Cometary Water on Venus: Implications of Stochastic Impacts 1
نویسندگان
چکیده
The short lifetime of water on Venus suggests t ha t the water abundance is in a near steady-state balance between loss by escape and replenishment by infall. In addition, the observed deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio on Venus is consistent with a steady state and does not necessarily imply a past water excess. We present results of a model incorporating a stochastic cometary source and nonthermal escape of hydrogen that produces the observed water abundance and D / H rat io. The stochastic variability of each of these quantities is shown to be large. We conclude that water on Venus is in a quasi-steady state mediated by large comet impacts and tha t the early history of water on the planet has been obscured by a history of random impacts. © 1988 Academic Press, Inc.

Hydrous Silicates and Water on Venus
We used thermochemical equilibrium calculations to predict Water vapor, present at 30–45 parts per million by volstabilities of pure rock-forming hydrous silicates on Venus’ ume (ppmv) in Venus’ subcloud atmosphere (Drossart surface as a function of elevation, atmospheric H2O and SO2 concentrations, and oxygen fugacity (fO2). متن کاملWater on Mars and Venus
This paper reviews evidence relating to the abundance of water on early Mars and Venus from measurements of the present abundance of hydrogen compounds, deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratios and escape fluxes. For Mars, recent measurements of D/H ratios in SNC hydrous minerals provide data on the ratios at earlier times to augment present atmospheric values. Interpretation of these data shows that...
متن کاملThe History of Venus
Introduction: Venus is commonly thought to have experienced a transition, within 1 billion years of its formation, to its current highly desiccated state from a wet, more Earth-like past [1]. The assumption of similar origins rests mostly upon cosmogonic arguments. However, it is possible that stochastic differences in the late phases of accretion could have left the " twin planets " with unequ...
متن کاملWater Ice in 2060 Chiron and Its Implications for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects.
We report the detection of water ice in the Centaur 2060 Chiron, based on near-infrared spectra (1.0-2.5 µm) taken with the 3.8 m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and the 10 m Keck Telescope. The appearance of this ice is correlated with the recent decline in Chiron's cometary activity: the decrease in the coma cross section allows previously hidden solid-state surface features to be seen. We ...

Fifty years ago a classic paper by W. W. Rubey [(1951) Geol. Soc. Am. Bull. 62, 1111-1148] examined various hypotheses regarding the origin of sea water and concluded that the most likely hypothesis was volcanic outgassing, a view that was generally accepted by earth scientists for the next several decades. More recent work suggests that the rate of subduction of water is much larger than the v...
